Why Our Feeding Program Matters

Food insecurity remains one of the biggest challenges facing children in informal settlements across Nairobi.

Many children in Korogocho:

Without proper nutrition, children struggle to concentrate in school, maintain good health, and develop physically and mentally.

Through our weekly feeding program, Empowered Dreams Initiative ensures that children receive meals that support their growth, wellbeing, and ability to learn.

How the Saturday Feeding Program Works

Our feeding program takes place every Saturday and includes two meals for participating children.

Morning Meal (Breakfast)

The day begins with a nutritious breakfast that energizes children for the day’s activities.

Typical meals include:

• Porridge and bread
  
  

• Tea and mandazi
  
  

• Sweet potatoes and tea
  
  

Breakfast provides the energy children need to participate in the learning and mentorship activities that follow.

Evening Meal (Dinner)

Before the children return home, they receive a warm and nutritious dinner.

Common meals include:

• Ugali and beans
  
  

• Ugali and sukuma wiki
  
  

• Rice and beans
  
  

• Githeri
  
  

These meals provide essential nutrients and help reduce hunger within the community.

Beyond Food: Building Hope and Opportunity

The Saturday Feeding Program also creates a platform for empowerment and mentorship.

During the day, children participate in activities such as:

• Talent showcases including music, dance, and rap
  
  

• Mentorship and life skills discussions
  
  

• Hygiene and health education
  
  

• Environmental awareness activities
  
  

• Educational encouragement and leadership training
  
  

These activities help children build confidence, discover their talents, and develop positive life skills.

Our Community Kitchen

To make the feeding program sustainable, Empowered Dreams Initiative is establishing a Community Kitchen in Korogocho.

This kitchen will serve multiple purposes:

• Preparing meals for the Saturday Feeding Program
  
  

• Supporting community nutrition initiatives
  
  

• Training young mothers in cooking and hospitality skills
  
  

• Operating as a social enterprise that helps sustain our programs
  
  

The Community Kitchen will strengthen our ability to reach more children while creating economic opportunities within the community.
